Throughout San Luis Obispo, brightly decorated utility boxes can be found, bringing a bit of cheer and creativity to an otherwise mundane object.

Well the city is ready for those boxes to literally get freshened up. Want your art to be seen by every Tom, Dick, Harry, and Sally? Currently, there are 32 utility boxes in the community that could serve as canvases for local artists. The SLO Box Art program, which started in 2010, is seeking new artists to contribute to the aesthetics of the community while also deterring graffiti.

Selected artists will be paid $700 to $1,500 for their work, depending on the size of the box, and can be reimbursed for art supplies, up to $200. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on March 18. Visit slocity.org for more information.
