Paso Robles is gearing up for its annual Taste of Downtown, and this year about 35 local chefs, wineries, and artisans are on board to create dazzling dishes (get your $25 pass by calling 238-4103). Don't forget to check out the colorful chalk artwork created by kids from ages 1 to 100 during the Arte de Tiza, which will unfold simultaneously around Downtown City Park.

Let's get juicy: It's almost Heirloom Tomato Festival time at Windrose Farm in Paso Robles. Tickets are on sale now for the Sept. 21 event featuring more than 40 varieties of heirloom tomatoes and thoughtfully crafted bites from local chefs (you can even camp out in the farm's apple orchard if you are so inclined: Get all the information you need at windrosefarms.com) ... Join the Avila Valley Barn for a hands-on class on jams, jellies, and pies this Sept. 12 and get your hands on fall harvest apples, and pumpkins, too (call 595-2816 for reservations).
