Cougars & Mustangs

The group of Cal Poly students committed to saving the world one beer bong at a time is continuing to party for a purpose! On July 23, the gentlemen behind Beerbongs for World Peace, a company that sells beer bongs to help feed starving children, are holding a party at Creeky Tiki in downtown SLO from 4 to 10 p.m. in an effort to bring more attention to their cause and their website,

“We’ve had a lot of positive action towards our cause,” said Quinn Lewis, a company co-founder. “And the orders are really starting to roll in.”

Each beer bong sells for $10, and the profits are donated to the World Food Program, an organization that feeds children in need throughout the world. One beer bong sale generates enough money to provide four hungry children with a wholesome meal.

“We live by the motto: We’re thirsty, they’re hungry,” said co-founder Casey Curtis.

Staying with booze news, Cal Poly’s Wine and Viticulture Program was recently honored with the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award for enduring contributions to the advancement of the California wine industry.

“We are honored to be recognized along with such an impressive group of Lifetime Achievement Award recipients,” said program Director John Peterson. “This is truly a student success story, since it is the students who define us. Every graduate of our program learns how to grow the grapes, make the wine, and sell the finished product.”

Since its inception with the planting of vineyards three decades ago, Cal Poly’s Wine and Viticulture Program has evolved to become the largest of its kind in the United States. Cal Poly graduates have risen to positions of leadership across all areas of the wine industry and at numerous leading wineries.

Transitioning from alcohol to athletics, the Cal Poly men’s soccer program announced the schedule for its upcoming season. The Mustangs ranked fourth among Division I programs by averaging 3,013 fans per home match last season. The home field advantage has paid dividends for the team as they have compiled a 24-5-6 record at Spanos Stadium since 2007.

The Mustangs kick off the regular season with a five-game homestand and open against UNLV on Aug. 27 at 7 p.m.
