NEW TIMES: How long has the YMCA been in San Luis Obispo?

RHYNES: The YMCA has been a part of San Luis Obispo County since 1956. For many years we were a “traveling road show” driving throughout the county and starting small groups of interest. However, we’ve been here at our Southwood location for roughly 20 years, but we have around 14 different establishments throughout the county.

NEW TIMES: What do you offer that is different from other gyms and exercise memberships?

RHYNES: Well, we don’t see ourselves as a “gym.” We’re known for being a health-and-fitness center. Our approach to a healthy lifestyle incorporates a more holistic approach for the body, mind, and spirit. We help incorporate strong character development and multicultural values, and we welcome people of all ages and ethnicities to try us. We don’t turn people away because of their financial circumstances. We offer assistance to allow people to join and we provide multiple exercise equipment and nutrition guides for all who join.

NEW TIMES: Do you have any special activities or plans for the summer?

RHYNES: We’ll be offering a great deal of summer activities and camps for children. Some of our camps incorporate a theme such as fantasy, or magic.

NEW TIMES: What is the highlight of the YMCA?

RHYNES: Definitely the atmosphere that our members enjoy. Everyone here, whether it would be the staff or fellow members, helps support others to further our goals. We take pride in the fact that our members are incredibly friendly and will make your visit a wonderful experience.
