Cal Poly tennis coach Justin McGrath resigned July 25 amid an NCAA investigation into Cal Poly’s tennis program for alleged rule and ethical violations.

You wouldn’t know there was an investigation if you looked at the Cal Poly website.

“Cal Poly men’s tennis coach Justin McGrath announced today that he has stepped aside from his position after five years with the Mustang program to pursue other tennis coaching opportunities,” the university announced online.

“I’ve enjoyed my time at Cal Poly,” McGrath said in a sunny Cal Poly press release. “But now I want to pursue some other challenges. I wish the Mustangs all the best.”

The mood is different when you talk to Cal Poly officials. When asked, officials are tight lipped about the subject but will acknowledge they are being probed by the NCAA.

“There is an NCAA investigation … of the tennis program,” said Brian Thurmon, director of media relations for the Cal Poly Athletic Department.

McGrath led the team to its first NCAA Division 1 Tennis Championship appearance last year and a 14-7 record.
