A 23-year-old woman has been charged with manslaughter and other felony counts in connection with a deadly drunk driving crash that occurred in Paso Robles on Dec. 16, 2015.

The SLO County District Attorney officially charged the woman, Lauren A. Alderete of Paso Robles, with felony counts of intoxicated manslaughter, drunk driving, and driving with a blood alcohol level of more than .08 percent in the wrong-way crash that killed 26-year-old Lindsay Faye Matzie and injured two others. 

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, Alderete was driving northbound in the southbound lane of Highway 101 near the Spring Street off ramp just after 3 a.m. when she slammed into Matzie’s vehicle head-on. Matzie, of Los Osos, died at the scene while her two passengers, identified as Kevin Alvin Cordova and Rotsen Victoriano were transported to the hospital. Alderete was also seriously injured in the crash.

Alderete had a blood alcohol level at or above .15 percent at the time of the accident, according to the criminal complaint filed against her. She also faces numerous criminal enhancements to the charges against her due to her reported blood alcohol level, and because she allegedly injured multiple people as a result of the crash.

The charges weren’t filed until May 20, 2016, nearly five months after the accident, because the investigation into the fatal crash needed to be completed and Alderete, who was taken to hospital in severe condition after the accident, was recovering from her injuries. 

Alderete is scheduled to appear in SLO County Superior Court June 6 for her arraignment.
