# A San Luis Obispo Police officer standing on the roof of a residence at 1031 Walnut St. shot a mountain lion shortly before 8 a.m. on Nov. 17. Earlier that morning, the young male cat was sighted behind the San Luis Obispo City Hall and around the intersection of Peach and Osos streets. Police contacted San Luis Obispo County Animal Control and State Fish and Game officials and caught up with the agitated animal as it made its way through backyards in the 1000 block of Walnut Street. Officers made the decision to shoot the animal due to its proximity to Mission School and the downtown area, the risk to pedestrians in the area, and the heavy traffic on Santa Rosa Street. The mountain lion was turned over to Fish and Game, which estimated the animal to be approximately two years old and 120 pounds.
