Age isn't just a number

I don’t know Dan Carpenter. Dan Carpenter is not a friend of mine. In fact, I don’t live in the city of San Luis Obispo. But I agree with and support what Dan Carpenter had to say (“Prohibition is over,” May 8) about the views of the mayor, Cal Poly’s vice president, and the nanny state.

However, I’d like to take that conversation a bit further and suggest that either the legal drinking age be “reduced” to 18 or the voting age and other adult privileges be “increased” to 21.

If a citizen is considered responsible enough to vote, get married, enlist in the military, sign a contract, and decide on an abortion at age 18, what sense does it make that those same folks are not responsible enough to drink until age 21?

I wonder if anyone, especially Madam Mayor or Cal Poly’s vice president, can logically answer that question.
