Your article “Cuesta students will march in Sacramento” (March 18) about demonstrations at the capitol against budget cuts to education says Cal Poly students will not participate in the protest because “it takes place over their spring break and student support is lacking.” I find that funny and revealing. Reading between the lines one would get the impression Cal Poly students simply don’t care. 

 The unfortunate long-term effect of the education cuts will be widening the gap between the haves and the have-nots. The haves will still be able to afford school, but a greater financial burden will be placed on the have-nots who already suffer great economic pressure. This will result in lower graduation numbers and increased social stratification.

Moreover, It is sad the California state government does not recognize the only way for America to hold on to the engineering, math, and science jobs being lost to overseas competitors is to invest in education.
