Hey! We're self indulgent ... oh. Ouch.

I have read your paper every week ever since I moved to the area five years ago and have really enjoyed the new voices that have recently joined your writing team. But today when I picked up the paper and began my ritual of reading it cover to cover, I was completely disappointed by one article: “Adult playtime” (May 3).

Why would you print such self-masturbatory crap? This seemed to me to be a personal party attended almost exclusively by your editorial staff. I was under the impression this column was about public events. If I wrote a story about the barbecue I had in my backyard with my friends and coworkers, would you print that? I am always down to blow off some steam, throw koopa shells at your friends, have a few libations, but why is you doing this worthy of print? This should have been relegated to your personal blog or Facebook wall. How arrogant are you that you think the county needs to read about your personal life? Your paper has a calendar of events that you could have found something to cover that doesn’t require a wine glass in hand, something that supports the arts community.

And shame on Nick Powell! When I see his name on a story, I usually look forward to his quirky wit that weaves through his stories. And then to have this waste of ink and paper in his repertoire is just embarrassing. Actually, you should all find this embarrassing. How do you expect to be taken seriously as journalists? Hanging a lantern on how unprofessional the editors are being (even if sarcastically) doesn’t make it worth the blow to the integrity of the paper. Throughout the article, Nick seems to throw up excuses as to why he is even writing this swill.

If I had read nothing else in your paper, I would think what a bunch of self-indulgent twats.
