Charlee Smith states in the May 29 letter (“Marriage isn’t a pick-and-choose institution”) that the GLBT community “need to learn to live with that” regarding their current domestic partner benefits. Her argument is that heterosexual unions produce children, and homosexual unions do not. As a matter of fact, many same-sex couples desire equal treatment precisely because they have, or want to have, children—and many opposite-sex marriages do not produce children.

If her concern is for children, she would champion parents who become legally married and seek full rights. Charlee, the California Supreme Court ruled against discrimination based on sexual orientation. I suggest that you “need to learn to live with that.”
