Obstructionism in A-Town

Regarding “Changes abound” in the Jan. 16 issue of New Times:

To refute global warming at this point in time is reckless, irresponsible, and bordering on lunacy. So who can really be surprised at the level of steadfast ignorance exhibited by Atascadero City Council members Fonzi and Moreno?

The editing of the Draft Cap Action Plan was a political move. It is Tea Party obstructionism. They then had the audacity to claim the language in the plan was too political. When something doesn’t jive with their ideology, it’s simply wrong, with no room for compromise. The astronomer who commented from the audience was absolutely correct when he mentioned it was indeed Fonzi and Moreno who had injected politics into the mix, not taking them out, as they insisted they were doing.

Within the “real” scientific community there is no debate. The overwhelming majority of scientists from many different fields of study all agree that carbon emissions from fossil fuels, coal burning, and deforestation are the primary reasons for climate change. This type of political obstructionism is an affront to democracy, and these members should be voted out next election.

As for Mr. Kelley’s comments: Sir, you represent a city, not a high school debate team. Green gas? Volcanoes? Really? What an embarrassment to our city. Again.

Oh, and all of this was done on a beautiful 80-plus degree day in mid-January next to a dry lake!
