I had little or no faith in the SLO Police Department until the city hired Steve Gesell. I was impressed with his enthusiasm, out-of-box thinking, and willingness to address everyone’s concerns. He treated everyone—from homeowners to Cal Poly students and the homeless—with the same concern and respect.

Steve and “the community” didn’t have fundamental philosophical differences. A vocal minority (anti-Cal Poly group), certain members of the City Council, and the city manager had philosophical differences with Chief Gesell.

Steve wasn’t interested in politics. He was an outstanding police chief who had the guts to stand up and defend fellow officers against those who generalize about law enforcement. As someone who works with police officers daily, I understood his desire to share the view from the other side.

We often fail to appreciate people who are willing to put their lives in danger to help total strangers. Steve showed us what it’s like to be human. San Luis Obispo has lost a valuable public servant. I have no doubt there are wonderful communities that will appreciate such an outstanding police officer and community leader.

For Steve, one door may close but an even more rewarding one is about to open. Thank you, Steve Gesell, for trying to make the city of San Luis Obispo a better place.
