Cal Poly has announced plans to renovate and expand Mustang Stadium, beginning next month (June). This project will impact negatively the mature palm trees that line California Boulevard and provide prime habitat for a variety of bird species. My cursory examination of the palms adjoining Mustang Stadium revealed over 200 active nests, including those of woodpeckers and barn owls that currently have nestlings.

Have Cal Poly's planners undertaken a recent and thorough examination of the environmental impact of their plans? If so, what will they be doing to prevent these hundreds of birds, their offspring, and their nests from being injured or destroyed? After last year's near-destruction of the Founders' Tree, Cal Poly alumni such as myself would like to receive concrete assurance that the University has committed itself to protecting its valuable environmental resources, and that its construction plans reflect this commitment.
