Tina Fey’s character Liz Lemon from NBC’s 30 Rock has a great line about the word “lovers” which goes like this: “Oh, that word bums me out unless it’s between the words meat and pizza.” Given that this is an article about heart-shaped pizzas, it was inevitable that I try to work that line in at some point, and since I needed a good intro I figured I would just go with that and then segue into the story by pointing out the fact that I have no segue.

Nardonne’s Pizzeria in Atascadero will be offering heart-shaped pizzas during the week of Valentine’s Day. Nardonne’s has been in business for more than 33 years, and this is the lucky 13th year they will be serving the heart-shaped pies.

The pizzas are available in three sizes: 12, 14, and 16 inches, and can be made with either a traditional red sauce or a white garlic sauce, whichever you and presumably your significant other prefer (if someone orders one of these for themselves, does it come with a free side of ranch dressing shaped like sadness?).

In celebration of National Heart Month, 10 percent of all sales made at Nardonne’s on Valentine’s Day will be donated to the American Heart Association. That way you can contribute to somebody else’s heart health while filling your coronary arteries with cheese and cured meats. Kind of like stuffed crust, except the crust is a vessel that supplies oxygen-rich blood to your myocardium, without which you would die.

Fear not though, as with most things, heart-shaped pizzas are totally fine in moderation. So all you star-crossed love … uh, people out there, head over to Nardonne’s for Valentine’s Day and pick one up.

Nardonne’s is located at 8501 El Camino Real in Atascadero and can be reached at 466-8858.
