A not-so-great outlook on the planet

Well, here we are. Another year. An “election” year, with limited choices. A “socialist” running as a Democratic Party candidate (as a candidate of one of the twin, Tweedle Dum, Tweedle Dee parties of the 1 percent), not as an independent as he’s always done before. A candidate on the other end who’s a spoiled, egocentric, arrogant rich kid, sowing hate and violence, dangerous divisions and mimicking the evolution of the genocidal, racist, warmongering fascist movements of the last century that led to the violent deaths of 80 million people. A female candidate who, in the final analysis, believes in nothing really solid anymore except her own ambition, power, and prestige—and in besting her deeply flawed ex-President husband.

Meanwhile, the planet wobbles on the brink of overlapping, massive, multiple catastrophes of all kinds—political, social, economic, environmental, cultural, and spiritual—most caused or made worse by the often irrational, destructive, selfish, and shortsighted machinations of our species.

My cat, in reality a cat-alien hybrid or possible demigod of some kind, calls us a bunch of overachieving monkeys who are WAY too taken with ourselves. He recommends that we lighten up, take more naps, savor our food, roll on the ground, and get our tummies rubbed more often. I think he has a point. Happy New Year, fellow monkeys. We really do need to do better. Take good care.
