A way to mold your week

If you didn’t already know it, this week is the most important week of the year. It’s national JELL-O week.

From Feb. 11-18 you can show your love to a dish that has given the American people so much. Everyone has a  JELL-Ostory. Maybe you took a note from The Office’s Jim Halpert and put a co-worker’s stapler in  JELL-O, or maybe the  JELL-O cup was the only edible thing in your lunch box as a kid. Maybe you were the product of a JELL-O shot- fueled 4th of July.

The best part of enjoying  JELL-O as an adult is alcohol. JELL-O shots avoid the hassle of cups and spoons and so effortlessly combine the sweet, childhood innocence of gelatin with the throat burning, sinfulness of booze. While classier nights usually prevail without the help of JELL-O shots, there is no better week than JELL-O week to leave a little wiggle room in your standards of taste.

Drunkmansguide.com is a website that provides some great recipes and tips on how to make the most out of your experience. In spite of itself, the recipe for Apple JELL-O shots manages to be rather delicious and the taste calls up memories of days spent sharing JELL-O cups on the jungle gym at recess. But be careful, as timid as they may seem, JELL-O shots can pack a punch.  And for less than a dollar a box, JELL-O makes it easy to get carried away.

The website also provides great little tricks on how to spice up your JELL-O shot repertoire, for those who feel like they’ve reached the maximum potential for such a collegiate enterprise. Substituting juice or concentrate for water will increase the flavor of the shot and adding whip cream makes it a dessert and a poor lifestyle choice.

If you’re like most people who regularly drink JELL-O, you probably don’t have the time or energy to put into preparing things. Having someone else handle the shots eliminates the hassle and the guesswork involved in measuring out the alcohol. While some might scoff at the mere notion of sitting at an Applebee’s bar, others know it to be the JELL-O shot capital of the world, or at least Arroyo Grande.

Every day during happy hour, JELL-O shots are a buck apiece. So this week, whether you head to the grocery store or your local watering hole, be sure to raise that plastic cup of wiggles and booze, in a toast to an American institution.
