This impressive, bold Syrah is earning the top scores from the critics, and deservedly so. You can still get it at their Paso Robles tasting room for $65. Hued a deep purple, it tastes of luscious blackberries, plums, and blueberries, all elegantly weaved with a thread of exotic spices. It drinks beautifully now but will reward you after a few years’ aging in the cellar. Grown on a mountaintop, the steep vineyard is on a limestone shelf that’s only 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Should you drink it early, pair it with equally bold foods: leg of lamb, venison, squab, or roast prime rib.
