Katie Couric’s annual salary at CBS is more than the annual budgets of NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered combined. So, when I recently heard her ‘notebook’ radio piece on Air America “progressive radio” let’s just say I was steaming. Though she understands retired firemen and teachers have made sacrifices in their careers, she feels times have changed and they should be ready to take cuts in the retirements they’ve counted on to keep them afloat: income our government guaranteed.
She’s been pulling down $15 million per year for several years and no doubt is worth every penny, considering what a sweet, gentle spokesperson she is for the folks at the top of the food chain. Who could better advise us about the need to reduce retirement payments to teachers and firefighters, when we can’t possibly return the tax rate on the wealthy (including her) to the level they paid ten years ago? A three percent increase in their taxes would go very far to relieve the budget mess we’re in, but our millionaires are too hard pressed to bear such a burden again.
I’m so glad such people at the top as Katie Couric are there to teach us what the new morality is all about. That’s why she makes the big bucks!
