Ancient Peaks 2009 Renegade Margarita Vineyard

This new blockbuster from winemaker Mike Sinor offers a robust Rhone blend of Syrah, Malbec, and Petite Verdot. Bold and flavorful, it’s rich with aromas and flavors of wild blackberries, black cherries, currants, and ripe plums, highlighted with notes of minerals, smoky meats, and toasty spices. Grown in the southernmost part of Paso Robles appellation, Margarita Vineyard lies just below the ridgeline of the Cuesta Grade. Only 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, it’s one of the coolest vineyard sites in the region. The varieties were barrel-aged separately 18 months, and then blended to create a rich wine of complexity and finesse. It’s delicious on its own, and a good choice at the table. Pair it with equally bold dishes like venison, buffalo, grilled ribeye, or leg of lamb. Available at the tasting room or local grocery stores, it’s $23 retail, or at Costco for $14.99.
