  • LOCAL TRADITION Owned by Joanne and Ross Currie since 1991, Splash Cafe has been gaining a following not just locally but nationally for its creamy clam chowder. The restaurant, with locations in SLO and Pismo Beach, distributes its specialty soup all over the country, and chowder sales have grown from 5,000 gallons a year in 1991 to more than 40,000 gallons a year today! For an extra $5, a sourdough bread bowl of chowder can come fully loaded, like the one pictured, with clams, seafood, bacon, green onions, and cheese.

  • INKED EXPRESSIONS Danny Derrick (pictured) of SLO Tattoo Company tied for the Best Tattoo Artist in the county, along with Jake Schroeder of The Mojave Room. Derrick runs an appointment-only studio and focuses on classic, traditional subjects and style: daggers, butterflies, skulls, roses, etc. One of his signature tattoos—a flash design that requires no drawing prep time on his part—is the Madonna Inn goblet. "One of my favorite tattoos to do!" he says on his website. Pro tip: He sells T-shirts of the goblet design at the Madonna Inn gift shop.

Maybe that's why Miner's consistently wins Best Hardware Store year after year. And this year it won Best Nursery/Garden Store, too.

  • DETROIT-STYLE LOVE Benny's Pizza was a pandemic favorite with Facebook followers waiting impatiently for Ben Arrona to drop the week's available pizzas into a post. The clamor for his Detroit-style pie helped him grow into a permanent fixture as part of Benny's Pizza Palace & Social Club in SLO, which won the Best New Company of 2021.
