Arroyo Grande isn’t usually associated with burlesque dancing. But that’s exactly what has come to town thanks to Shelby Bundy and her dance studio, Tantrum. Located on Grand Avenue, Tantrum is a women-only studio focused on a rather unique area of dance fitness.

The studio’s pink walls and abundance of mirrors give the impression of a ballet studio. But take one look at the Dirty Dancing quote—“Nobody puts baby in a corner”—painted on the wall, and you get the sense that there’s more going on here than just arabesques.

Bundy, a San Diego native and fitness buff, decided to start the studio—which she opened in June—with her husband after she grew tired of more traditional methods of exercise.

“I was working out a lot, but I realized that I was burning out on my usual routines,” she said. “So I started taking Zumba and I fell in love. Dancing is never boring, and I realized that other women could benefit from the same type of body movement.”

For Bundy, Zumba led to belly dancing, which led to burlesque, which led to chair dancing. Tantrum tends to walk on the wild side, but Bundy says her staff of 13 trainers also know how to do the tamer stuff, too.

“We offer several types of yoga, and we are starting a teen Tantrum class that has moves and music to fit a younger crowd,” Bundy said. “… Our youngest member is 19 and our oldest is almost 70.”

What started out as a small but devoted group of dancers has grown, and demand for the classes has forced Bundy to move to a bigger space.

“We’ll be moving to Grover Beach in October, and then we can start our pole-dancing classes,” she said, “and we’ll have a couple of rooms there so we can offer different classes at the same time.”

After an overwhelming number of requests, Bundy decided to start offering the pole-dancing classes.

“You would think it’s the girls in their 20s asking for it, but it’s women in their 40s and their 50s looking for a way to change up their workouts.”

Bundy admits that Arroyo Grande isn’t exactly a hotbed for seductive, scantily clothed moms and teachers, but she seems to have hit a demographic typically underserved in the community.

“Our members are moms, full-time employees, fitness lovers, women trying to lose weight … you name it,” she said. “We want to offer a way to let them be all those things and get a fun workout.”

Tantrum is at 930 E. Grand Ave. in Arroyo Grande—until Oct. 15, when it will move to the Grover Beach Shopping Plaza. The studio offers 32 classes a week, Monday through Saturday. For more information, check out tantrumdancefitness.com or visit the studio’s Facebook page.
