A 68-year-old woman is facing serious jail time for allegedly embezzling more than $1 million from her employer.
The SLO County District Attorney's Office announced that it filed 12 felony grand theft charges against Elizabeth Edith Shaw on April 19. She allegedly stole more than $1 million over a 12-year period from her employer, Cambria-based Windsor Construction, according to a written statement from the DA's Office April 26.
"Theft committed by those in positions of trust are especially troubling," SLO County District Attorney Dan Dow said in the statement. "Particularly when it involves this level of taking over such an extended period of time from a local business." The charges against Shaw were the result of a 10-month-long investigation by the DA's major fraud unit and the SLO County Sheriff's Office. Shaw turned herself in to the SLO County Jail April 24 in lieu of $1 million bail.
Shaw was originally scheduled for arraignment on April 26, but the hearing was rescheduled for May 1. As of April 26, she had not entered a plea to the charges against her. If convicted, Shaw could face up to 16 years and four months in prison.
