The tides of change start with one. Or 100,000.
100 Thousand Poets for Change is a worldwide event that unites poets, artists, and musicians in a collaborative effort to raise awareness and bring resolution to social and environmental issues. Through readings, concerts, workshops, and other forms of expression, artists will focus on cultural tensions such as war, racism, ecocide, and censorship. The goal of 100 Thousands Poets for Change is a redirection of societal orthodox toward something more peaceful and sustainable.
Locally, 100 Thousand Poets for Change will take place at the Sanitarium in San Luis Obispo on Sept. 29, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. There will be a potluck barbecue, readings by selected local authors, and an open-mic session where authors and acoustic musicians are encouraged to share their artistic renditions of social justice. The event will also be broadcast by Morro Bay radio station 97.3, the Rock.
Selected readers include Paul Corman Roberts, Ivan Brown Otter, B.A. Boyd, Paul Lobo Portugés, Anne Candelaria, Missy Church, Rudy Calderon, James Cushing, and SLO Poet Laureate Bonnie Young.
So far, 700 events in 115 countries are planned for Sept. 29. Through creation, performance, and demonstration, the founders of 100 Thousand Poets for Change hope to educate and bring communities together, ultimately leading to a culmination of the greater global community.
“The most important goal is that we get together and enjoy one another’s company, acknowledging that we are an integral force on local issues,” said SLO event organizer Youssef Alaoui. “And also, that we are part of a growing group of like-minded individuals all over the world.”
The Sanitarium is at 1716 Osos St. in San Luis Obispo. The event kicks off at 5:30 with the barbecue. There will be a fire pit and grill provided; all you need to do is bring the munchies and cooking utensils.
