When President Jimmy Carter, who grew up in the overtly racist “Jim Crow” South, announced, “I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a Black man, that he’s African-American,” Republican National Committee director Michael Steele leaped to the defense of GOP politicians everywhere protesting that there is absolutely no racism in Republican opposition to every single reform President Obama advocates. Well, except maybe: “That BOY’S finger does not need to be on the button” (U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis of Kentucky), and “Obama TAGS (open season to hunt down the President)? We’d buy some of those!” (GOP gubernatorial candidate Rex Rammell of Idaho), and “They want Americans to move to the urban core, live in tenements .... That’s their vision for America” (Rep. Michele Bachman of Minnesota), and finally, “Republicans are struggling right now to find the GREAT WHITE HOPE!” (U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas); emphases added by me. On top of those racist slanders, consider the fact that 17 members of Congress are still encouraging the “birthers,” promoting an idiotic and racist lie actively promulgated by the crazed right-wingnuts, one that has now been completely debunked in Federal Court. In the prescient words of Princeton Professor Melissa Harris-Lacewell, “Racist attacks on a Black President are tantamount to yelling ‘Fire!’ in a crowded theater.”
The racists and bigots and their allies are actively working to burn our great and historically tolerant country to the ground as they madly seek to undermine the democratically elected Obama presidency, no matter what the cost to our national reputation. Their efforts are poison to the heart and the soul of America, the beautiful.
