Congrats, Coach Mott and Mission Prep

A big-time congratulatory bouquet to Coach Tom Mott and his Mission Preparatory School for their work in making the recent Seventh Annual Mission Prep Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament a great success. Thirty basketball teams from as far away as Florida and New York and as close as San Luis Obispo got to try their basketball skills against some of the best high school players in the United States.

As an example, one of the premiere games pitted Fresno's two seven-foot-tall players against the great Our Savior High School team from New York City. It turned into “West Coast vs. East Coast style of basketball and it was a close and fiercely fought contest featuring some of the greatest high school athletes in America. Coaches from some of America's major universities that came to San Luis Obispo to see and recruit these outstanding players included representatives from Memphis, UCLA, Washington State, University of Washington, UC Santa Barbara, Stanford University, UC Irvine, and our own Cal Poly, along with several community colleges.

It is hard to calculate the favorable economic impact of this tournament on San Luis Obispo County, but when you consider that each of the out-of-county teams have brought as many as 30 team members and coaches, along with moms and dads and fans, it becomes another large source of cash for our local tourist industry.

Coach Mott, your deceased grandfather and my friend, Cal Poly Athletic Director Bob Mott, would have been proud of your efforts.
