Diseases and pollutants are
a true threat

Regarding the article “Under the weather” (Feb. 12) written by Adriana Catanzarite, congratulations to Kathleen Karle for the pilot program “Outside In SLO,” a teaching program for citizens to learn about the many health and safety effects of climate change, such as water pollution, air quality, drought, wildfires, and storms. Many of us have read of these effects through our news publications, but the one that was new to me was the potential for the spread of waterborne diseases as a result of a higher concentration of pollutants in our sinking water tables.

This is a frightening threat and makes the management of our groundwater even more urgent. As a bike rider and a retired public health nurse, I was especially pleased to read that Ms. Karle’s presentation to the public health nurses resulted in at least one person’s decision to drive less and ride her bicycle more! This is an inspiration and great example to all of us.
