When those of us who actually pay attention have the audacity to question the manner in which San Luis Obispo is run, we're continually reminded that some group voted this "the happiest place in North America."
Well, there's hype, and then there's what Joe Biden calls "malarkey."
Unlike the editorial board of our local daily paper, which endorsed the re-election of the mayor and two council incumbents, I've actually attended SLO City Council meetings. Dozens of them.
And I can tell you that none of the current council members merits any further time on this panel.
I've lived in a number of California cities, including Santa Maria, and I can assure you that I've never observed a city more poorly run than is SLO.
This city is administrator heavy and performance light.
The city manager makes more than $100,000 more than the man who runs the 112-campus Community College League of California, yet the streets are filled with jolting patches, we wasted a million bucks on a few feet of downtown sidewalks, the city attorney is off on a homeless-hunting tangent, and this council just nods and approves.
Vote only for challengers, and let's return control of SLO to where it belongs: the city council. Stop letting the city manager tail wag the city dog.
