And you thought Festival Mozaic was just a summer thing. The annual classical music festival also offers a concert series called WinterMezzo to get you your classical fix during the colder months. The coming season’s programming has recently been announced, and tickets are already on sale.
During the weekend of Nov. 1-3 is a program called “Trios,” described as a celebration of the Piano Trio: Haydn’s Piano Trio in E-flat major; Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D major, also referred to as his “Ghost Trio”; and Dvořák’s Piano Trio in E minor, also called his “Dumky Trio.” Festival Director and violinist Scott Yoo, cellist Bion Tsang, and pianist John Novacek will perform the three works.
The second program, which takes place over the weekend of Feb. 28-March 2, features works by Bach, Mozart, and Brahms. Bach’s Cello Suite No.6 in D, the last of the composer’s six suites for unaccompanied cello, will be featured alongside the final string quartets of Mozart and Brahms: Mozart’s String Quartet in F major and Brahms’ String Quartet No. 3 in B-flat major. The program, which spotlights “the culmination of these composers’ mastery of the genres,” according to the festival’s program notes, will be performed by Yoo, violinist Serena McKinney, violist Hari Bernstein, and cellist Michelle Djokic.
WinterMezzo weekends are structured so that classical music lovers can mix and match their events as they explore that weekend’s featured works. On Friday is an evening called “Notable Encounter Insight,” in which guests are treated to a complimentary glass of wine as they listen to musicians discuss topics related to the pieces they will perform. On Saturday, the discussion becomes more interactive, with either a “Notable Encounter Salon” or a “Notable Encounter Dinner.” Attendees have the chance to enter into a deeper discussion with the performers and hear highlights of that weekend’s program, generally over dinner or wine. Finally, on Sunday, it all comes together: guests can attend a WinterMezzo Concert, perhaps enjoying a deeper understanding of the works performed.
Locations include the pavilion at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden, the Masonic Lodge, and even a private residence. Tickets can be purchased individually at festivalmozaic.com, or by calling 781-3009. A free master class will also be offered in conjunction with each WinterMezzo weekend: with violinist Bion Tsang on Sunday, Nov. 2 and with violinist Scott Yoo on Saturday, March 1. Both free classes take place at 10:30 a.m. in Room 216 of the Cal Poly Music Dept.
