The red-carpet premier of Wendelin Van Draanen’s book-turned-movie Flipped, takes place on Aug. 21 at 4:30 p.m. at Fair Oaks Theatre in Arroyo Grande. Flipped is a young adult novel published in October of 2001. The novel traces the relationship of Bryce and Julianna, starting out as young children and ending in junior high.

Van Draanen’s other works include the popular Sammy Keyes series, the Shredderman series, along with Runaway, Swear to Howdy, Confessions of a Serial Kisser, and How I Survived Being a Girl. The first book in the Sammy Keyes series, Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief, won the 1999 Edgar Allen Poe Award for Best Juvenile mystery.  The series is about amateur detective, and seventh-grader, Samantha Keyes, and the 12-book series is expected to eventually expand to 20. The next book in the series—Sammy Keyes and the Wedding Crasher—is slated for release this October.

In 2007, Nickelodeon released a television movie based on Van Draanen’s book Shredderman Rules. The protagonist, Nolan Byrd aka Shredderman, attempts to get the better of a school bully named Bubba Bixby.

Three lucky kids have a shot at winning two tickets to the film premier of Flipped. To enter write a 100-200 word review of the book, and submit it to rmiller@santamariasun.com by 5 p.m. on Aug. 13. The winning entries will be printed in New Times on Aug. 19.
