Fresh baked goods and designer duds aren’t just for two legged family members anymore. Not since the Waggin Tail CafÈ and Barkery opened its doors at 722 Marsh Street on March 31. Fido can doggy up to the counter and choose between pup tarts, chow down cannolis, or muddy paw tartletts before selecting from the finest designer duds SLO has to offer.

# Prior to opening the Barkery, proprietors Dawn Curnes and Bill Emerson worked and lived in San Jose. Their love of dogs, especially Curnes 4-year-old Labrador mix Ruby, motivated their life-changing move. “One day an intruder walked into my home, Curnes says. “Ruby chased him out. I wanted to do this for her. Ruby can be found lounging in the “Doggie Paw-ty Room where pampered pets are provided with water bowls, snack tables, and chew toys.

The culinary masterpieces appeal to humans as well as pets. “A lady was in here the other day and wanted to try one, Curnes says. “I gave her a carob drizzle bone. She said it wasn’t bad. I like the mutt muffins. I guess I will be selling to people too. The bakery uses only fresh premium ingredients, with no preservatives, fillers, artificial coloring, sodium, sugar, or animal fat. The low-fat hard biscuits and soft treats are made from a tempting combination of wheat, bananas, apples, and oatmeal. For the hypoallergenic guest, wheat and corn free apple flavored treats are a favorite.

Top dogs with the right connections get invited to pooch parties in the Barkery’s “Doggie Paw-ty Room. Party services include a freshly made decorated birthday cake, Scooby-Doo plates, party hats, and plenty of room for canine party goers and their human guests to frolic. The birthday dog can bark an invite to five furry friends.

This season, your fashion conscious canine can select between the hottest apparel and accessories on the market. Doggie clothing items include lime-green silk berets, black leather caps, frilly party dresses, and western wear.

Though it’s hard to remember now, there was a time when feeding your pooch meant selecting between grocery store brands of dry or canned processed foods. These days you can pamper your pet with a daily diet made from holistic, all-natural ingredients. The chicken and duck meals the Barkery distributes from Eagle Pack pet foods are hormone- and antibiotic-free.

The Waggin Tail CafÈ and Barkery also features toys, collars, leashes, sleeping bags, pet back packs, doggy sun and wind protection goggles, dog CD’s including tunes to calm the traveling pooch, and a huge array of all-natural grooming supplies.

SLO canines and their owners are invited to attend the Barkery’s grand opening celebration on April 22. Enjoy complimentary hotdogs while Fido munches on a carob drizzle bone. SLO pet photographer Jeanne Harris will be on hand to capture the moment. Harris specializes in innovative, digital, black and white or color photography. The Waggin Tail CafÈ and Barkery is open seven days a week. For more info call 787-0190.
