After I finished reading the letter from Bob Spielman in the Feb. 24-March 3 issue, I was dismayed and disgusted.
He has taken hearsay and used it as a cudgel to denigrate a worthwhile organization. The Gay And Lesbian Alliance of the Central Coast (GALA) is not a political organization. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public service corporation that has always been an inclusive organization dedicated to furthering a higher standard of living for all gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning persons in all of San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara counties. It cannot be involved in political activity of the type Mr. Spielman cites, or it would lose its nonprofit status. I know because I was the secretary of the GALA Board from December 2001 to October 2003.
If some members have taken it upon themselves to indulge in such activity, they are in the wrong and seriously misguided, especially if they are presenting it as an official policy of GALA. It isn’t. The GALA officers and board of directors should investigate and censure the members responsible. Also, it is my personal opinion that this letter is a “push poll type of communication aimed at spreading misinformation. If this is not the case, I apologize.
I have many Republican friends and relatives, and they respect my right to hold different views and opinions as I respect theirs. I invite Mr. Spielman and any other interested persons to find out the truth about GALA by visiting the web site at www.ccgala.org.
