Same-sex marriage may not be a pressing issue for the majority of citizens, although it is vitally important to those who are intimately concerned with the issue. Most embrace the freedoms granted to all Americans by the Bill of Rights. All individuals have the right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness even when that pursuit includes private, legal activities about which we may personally disagree (Lawrence v. Texas).
Nevertheless, the institution of marriage is an ancient tradition to be respected. The wishes of the majority to preserve a tradition that extends back millennia should likewise be respected: that marriage is between a woman and a man. California and most states have legal statutes that extend domestic legal protections to committed same-sex couples. Taking the legal step to force a cultural change in support of same-sex marriage would be a significant error.
