Giuseppe’s Day Off Cocktail
Move over candied bacon, bloody mary, fresh-squeezed mimosa, and orange-adorned Shock Top! There’s a new day-drink beverage in town and it’s sure to add a boozy glow to your next lazy afternoon. Do what I did, and stroll on down to Palazzo Giuseppe for your much-earned Day Off, a mix of Stoli Citros, Cointreau, and fresh muddled lemon. I really do suggest that you clear your entire schedule: This one is as powerful as it is refreshing, and it comes in a very tall, icy glass that just keeps on giving! The flavor reminds me of chowing down on frozen lemonade while waiting in line for the Ring of Fire at the California Mid-State Fair (minus the endless scraping with a plastic spoon and plus a whole lot of alcohol). From there on, the ride is very similar.

Bang the Drum Brewery’s Nebula
By now you probably know that Bang the Drum—the Central Coast’s teeniest and most laid back brewery—is known for creating some truly interesting small-batch brews, like their popular “King Mate” Yerba Mate-infused British style IPA. I love the fact that this nimble-yet-mighty business is free to be as creative as it wants to be: On the two occasions I visited the brewery in the past month or so, two totally different beer lineups were offered on tap, with another about to go into effect. Right now, I’m really digging Bang the Drum’s Nebula, available (probably still) on tap and in the bottle. The bourdon-barrel-aged chocolate porter is the perfect “start of fall” beer. It offers up true oaky substance, lip smacking toastiness, hints of roasted caramel, and a luxurious frothiness of character. It really make me just want to slip into a turtleneck sweater and swish my oxfords through the leaves.
