A newcomer to the nosh pit: Formerly of farm-to-table hot spot Camino in Oakland, Chef Tim Veatch knows how to dance with Mother Nature. I for one am very excited to say that he’s now creating uber seasonal dishes at Thomas Hill Organics in Paso Robles, which is currently gearing up to open a San Luis Obispo location this fall (thomashillorganics.com) … The Central Coast Cider Festival is about to pop, bubble, and fizz to fruition this May 7 in Atascadero! The first-time event has officially sold out, which is a very good sign for the growing local hard cider industry … Tickets are still available for the Macaroni and Cheese Festival oozing into Avila Beach this June 18, so plan on some major munchies (themacandcheesefest.com) … Grab-and-go lunch alert! Did you know Ubatuba on Marsh Street in downtown SLO is now serving empanadas ... and they’re under $5?

Fresh news!

And the California Green Medal goes to: Halter Ranch Vineyard and Tablas Creek Vineyard aren’t just friendly Paso neighbors—they’re local do-gooders leading the way to a brighter Earth! Tablas Creek recently took home an award for community building, and Halter Ranch won kuddos for sustainable winegrowing at a competition hosted in part by the Wine Institute! … This May 15, hop on a rugged tour with FARMstead ED bound for Cambria’s Stepladder Creamery, where goat cheese, avocado-finished pork, and honey abounds (farmsteaded.com) … Whoo hoo! SLO Bitter Co. has made their Kickstarter goal of $3,000 and owner Robin Kirk Wolf is now working hard to supply your personal wet bar with the finest local cocktail accouterments (slobitterco.com) … California Fresh Market will be opening up a store in SLO at 767 Foothill Blvd! The doors are slated to open this August and shoppers can expect the same local bounty they’ve come to expect from their Pismo Beach and Santa Ynez locations.

Happy meals

Still not sure what to get mom? Take her to a delicious brunch! A few nontraditional ideas: Go authentically German with Beda’s Biergarten in SLO (check for menu additions on Facebook) or go Dixie-fried with heavy comfort at The Southern Station in Santa Margarita (chicken and waffles are a good way to say “I love you.”) … SLO Donut Co. is killing it by fostering all ages music shows and they’re also making some creative sweets I want to stuff in my face, including pumpkin spice doffles (yes—that’s doughnut waffles) with maple glaze, peanut butter, jelly, salted caramel, and cinnamon sugar (follow them on Instagram @slodonutcompany for your next guilty pleasure).

Hayley Thomas didn’t even know doffles were a thing! Educate her by sending an email to hthomas@newtimesslo.com.
