Many voices have been heard for years about concerns for the Salinas River and its tributaries ... At last we have victory! The Board of Supervisors voted, unanimously, to reject the appeal of the Jan. 22 Planning Commission’s denial of the Pehl sand mine pit. We neighbors have worked for years to defeat such industrial projects from coming into our agriculture and residential area. Many have only heard of the “hungry and angry” river when we have big rain events. Thank you to Fish and Game and Regional Water Quality Control for your scientific studies, time, and work involved. Kudos to our own Supervisor Frank Mecham for making the motion and to all the board for the wisdom to follow his lead to deny the project and recommend a specific plan for our Salinas River and its watershed. Thank you to the mining applicants for making our neighborhood a family.
