It happens every day. You look up from your lowly cubicle, tired from long hours of pretending to answer e-mails or counting the amount of times your desk mate sighs audibly, and you realize it’s almost the witching hour: 5 o’clock. Suddenly your step becomes a little lighter, and if you listen hard enough, you can hear the sounds of the seven dwarfs whistling for you outside your window.
Maybe you loosen the knot in your tie or the death grip your spandex underwear has on your thighs. You count down the seconds to freedom, and when that glorious clock strikes 5, it’s all you can do not to leave skid marks as you sprint to the parking lot.
But going home is a total drag. Like work, there are people there too—and let’s face it: The only person you want to talk to is the guy cracking open your first Corona of the night. Going out seems like, and usually is, the best option.
Maybe you haven’t heard, but the economy is bad. Going out might come at the cost of two months’ worth of groceries or that dental crown you’ve been meaning to get fixed for the last three years.
That means knowing where the best happy hours are has become a survival instinct. Thankfully, San Luis Obispo County has no shortage of great deals on cocktails and appetizers to make the workday’s events melt away with that first, cold sip of booze.
If you want to weep into your margarita with a pretty view, the Cliffs Resort hosts a happy hour with an ocean view, Monday through Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m.
During that time, you can get $6.50 well drinks, margaritas, and house wines. Just $3.50 will get you Firestone, Shocktop, or other domestic draft bottles. They have an amazing assortment of food to go with the booze deals, too! A baked potato bar happens on Monday, Tuesday is Karmic pizza (a portion of the profits from the pizzas goes to local charity), Wednesday is 50 percent off select seafood appetizers, and Thursday features chicken wings. Friday deals depend on the season.
If you work downtown and are in the mood for cheap drinks, Black Sheep also has the tune to match the ambiance.
Another downtown classic, Sidecar has happy hour every weekday, starting at 4 p.m. and they really shine when it comes to the edible portion of the evening. They have everything from fried brussels sprouts to “tater bombs” (crème fraiche, artisan cheeses, and bacon, all for $6). Their drink specials include $1 off all signature drinks, wine by the glass, and pints; $4 off bottles of wine; $2.50 Kreuzberg blonde pints; and $4 well drinks.
What I’ve presented in this column is a small sampling of the infinite happy hour possibilities in SLO, and really, there’s no excuse to hate your job when there’s happy hour. ∆
