We, along with others, rejoice that Fr. Junipero Serra was declared a saint by the Catholic Church. The Spanish missionaries brought Western civilization with its many gifts to California and other Western states. All of us are the beneficiaries of beautiful Spanish architecture found here in California. They taught the natives about agriculture, introducing them to many fruits and vegetables. Yes, above all they brought the good news of Jesus Christ in who alone salvation is to be found, John 14:6, Acts 4:12. To God be the glory for all eternity. A new book offering a fresh perspective is Juniper Serra: California, Indians and the Transformation of a Missionary by Rose Marie Beebe and Robert Senkewicz from the University of Oklahoma Press.
