I have read Jim Mallon’s commentary in the Sun, “What will end the obsession?” with interest, and as a concerned citizen I think Mr. Mallon should also read the letter to the editor on the page following his. There is a very accurate letter from Ian Campbell of San Luis Obispo discussing the Isla Vista tragedy. His take on the situation is that guns are inanimate objects and that we should blame the person. The Isla Vista tragedy also had three of the victims killed by knives or a hatchet; should we ban knives? Pedestrians were stuck and injured by the mixed up Mr. Rodger—should we ban vehicles?
In all of the gun-related tragedies in the country, including Sandy Hook, the killer was a mentally mixed up person. We as a society should spend more effort on the mentally ill in the USA and not always focus on guns.
Again, Mr. Mallon should read Ian Campbell’s letter to the editor.
Thanks for the opportunity.
