Dark skid marks stained the road and a broken power pole lay shattered in the street across from San Luis Obispo High School on the afternoon of March 5, when a pickup truck crashed into the power pole across from the school's main entrance on San Luis Drive, causing a massive power outage downtown, according to SLOPD Sgt. Jeff Booth.
In addition to the blackout, the crash caused an electric surge to break a power line across the street from Scolari's market on Johnson Avenue and started a small fire in a nearby tree, said SLOFD Captain Chris Slate.
The damages prompted officials to close portions of Johnson Avenue and San Luis Drive.
Slate said the incident was very dangerous.
"We're dealing with high energy lines," he said. "Anybody that touches them can kill themselves." Power was restored hours later.
