STEYNBERG GALLERY HOSTS THE SLO FAVORITE POEMS PROJECT on the first Sundays of the month from 4-6pm. This is a different style of poetry reading: instead of their own work, featured readers and audience members read only poems that are written by others, and are related to a monthly topic. CENTRAL COAST BOOK AND AUTHOR FESTIVAL which takes place Oct. 4 from 10am-4pm in Mission Plaza in SLO. Kids will be dazzled by the Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man show. Enjoy free readings, workshops, author panels, art show, book sales, book signings, kids’ story time, entertainment and more. ANOTHER TYPE OF GROOVE OPEN MIC AND SPECIAL POETRY READINGS take place on the first Wednesday of the month at Cal Poly in SLO. In celebration of Latino Heritage Month, the Cal Poly MultiCultural Center’s Another Type of Groove presents Chicano spoken word poet and activist Tomás Riley on Oct. 7 at 7:30pm in the Chumash Auditorium. Riley’s performance poetry career began in 1994 as a member of the Taco Shop Poets, an eminent Chicano spoken word collective that balanced poetry with live music and grassroots politics.
