Police are still investigating the cause of death of a local rabbi who was found in his car.

Scott M. Corngold, formerly of Long Beach, N.Y., was found dead in his car, parked near Cave Landing Road in Avila Beach on the morning of Nov. 26, according to a San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Corngold served as a rabbi with the Beth David Congregation in San Luis Obispo. He had resigned from the congregation shortly before his death, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The cause of his death hasn’t been determined. As of press time, the Sheriff’s Department coroner was in the midst of an autopsy and awaiting toxicology reports that were expected to be complete by the end of December. There was no firearm or appearance of external injuries, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman told New Times.

Corngold’s body was discovered by a passing motorist who saw the car’s flashing lights. When the driver wouldn’t wake up, the motorist called for help. Fire and medical personnel began CPR and transferred Corngold to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The Beth David Congregation didn’t return a call seeking comment before press time.
