- MOLLY PITCHER’S EXTRA SPECIAL BITTER:
Named for the courageous women said to have fought the Battle of Monmouth during the Revolutionary War, Atascadero’s Molly Pitcher Brew pub is all wood, metal, American flags, and small-batch craft beer. There’s no pretense here—just live, twang-tinged folk bands, a blue-collar vibe, and tap after tap of fresh brewed offerings, including Molly Pitcher’s signature Pale, Imperial Red, IPA, Stout, and Blonde. This week: Grab a pint of the brewery’s seasonal ESB, available until “it gets drank.” Similar to an English Pale Ale, the Extra Special Bitter is mighty malty, with sweet caramel notes (your average IPA is far more true-to-the-bone “bitter” than this). Better yet, take bartender Burl Jensen’s advice, and cut the ESB with Molly Pitcher’s heady, chocolate-tinged stout for a black and tan worth hopping the grade for.
About $5 for a pint; Molly Pitcher is at 8760 El Camino Real, Atascadero.
Shiver me timbers: Bristols Cider House’s Calico Jack
Calico Jack the pirate was a swashbuckling English buccaneer who rocked the Bahamas circa the 1700s. With its take-no-prisoners tart, green apple attitude, Calico Jack the cider may become just as legendary. Try the refreshingly crisp, dry hopped cider crafted from 100 percent local Granny Smith apples along with five other pirate-inspired ciders (including Anne Bonny, aged in bourbon casks; Black Bart, dry hopped with Saison yeast; and the bold, bottle-finished Black Beard, comprised of 100 percent Arkansas Black apples and aged 14 months in old bourbon barrels). Or, if you fancy, buy a straight pint or a bottle, and hang out with the locals watching the World Cup. The bar, which had a soft opening Saturday, June 7, features comfy vintage chairs, a spacious bar, a juke box, and a graphically arresting mural depicting a mélange of British fliers and street art. Organic, gluten-free, and a far cry from your average saccharine-sweet variety, Bristols Cider is a proud black sheep in a candy apple world.
About $5 for a taste of six crisp apple ciders; Bristols Cider House is at 3220 El Camino Real, Atascadero.
