Thank you for the article on the trenching accident (“Trench deaths,” Jan. 15). Working in trenches is dangerous work, even in the best conditions. There are detailed training requirements for supervisors and workers to prevent these types of tragedies. Most contractors are aware of this and go to great lengths to insure they are meeting or exceeding the safety requirements of Cal/OSHA. The rarity of these accidents speaks to the culture of safe practices that has become the standard in the construction industry. I realize that is little consolation to victims and their families, and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to them at this very difficult time.
