New Times You’re the general manager at Dolphin Bay Resort and Spa in Shell Beach?

Sean Damery Yes I am. I have been here a year and before this I was in Monterey. I’ve also worked at the Ojai Valley Inn and at the Four Seasons in Hawaii, on the big island.

New Times What was your vision for Dolphin Bay when you came to work there?

Damery We wanted to bring attention to it as a world-class boutique resort, which it is, and we branded it as a “resort spa” about a year ago. It has started to take off, so the world class traveler who wants a five diamond or five star experience can have that.

New Times What makes Dolphin Bay stand out among other places in Shell Beach?

Damery We offer more than just a hotel, because it’s a residential experience. The rooms are like homes with kitchens and dining rooms, and our entire philosophy is, you can stay a day or you can stay a month. It’s a unique experience. The rooms here are Four Seasons prices but twice as big. Each one is handcrafted.

New Times So how does Cinema Under the Stars fit in with this philosophy?

Damery It fits in with trying to build Dolphin Bay as a resort with activities that everyone would enjoy. The other side of that is trying to open something up to the locals, offering them something complimentary. We invite them to come watch movie night on the lawn, or on the Lido patio (Dolphin Bay’s premiere restaurant, lounge, and bar).

New Times What can audiences expect at Cinema Under the Stars?

Damery Sometimes we do a lawn set up, and sometimes we do a patio set up and patrons can sit at tables or we have lawn chair seating. The movie screen is set up on the lawn. You can also grab popcorn and candy, since we offer concessions.

New Times Why 007 as a movie theme for the summer?

Damery The committee wanted to pick a theme this year since last year we jumped around a bit with our movie choices, and this year we wanted a clientele who would come to every movie.

New Times What’s your favorite Bond movie?

Damery Licensed to Kill.

New Times You guys have a lot of stuff going on … what else is happening over there?

Damery We also offer Fireside Grill, Tuesday wine tastings in Lido, Louie Ortega plays live music, kids programs, and these movie nights. It’s to capture the attention of the locals as well and let them know that we want them to come to Lido and hang out at the property and enjoy it. ∆

Christy Heron says champagne at Lido sounds nice right about now. Salud at cheron@newtimesslo.com.
