A new statewide organization with a mission to lobby against nuclear power plants has formed in San Luis Obispo. The Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility (ANR) is a spin-off of the Mothers for Peace.
“The goal is to amend the public resource code, which basically says you can’t build nuclear power plants, said David Weisman, ANR board member. “We want to add a sentence that basically says you can’t re-license existing plants.
Diablo Canyon Power Plant is one of two nuclear power plants in the state.
“[ANR is] a legislative approach, that’s what makes it different than Mothers [for Peace], said Weisman. Due to its nonprofit status, Mothers for Peace is not allowed to lobby. Mothers for Peace will continue pursuing its lawsuits, though.
“The alliance is a nonprofit, but donations are not tax-deductible because they are lobbying for legislation, said Weisman.
Weisman said that the health costs and risks of operating nuclear power plants are too great to ignore. “We went to the moon and you’re telling me we can’t have wind and solar power that works? said Weisman. “We see a brighter future.
