Nipomo man’s high-speed chase cut short

The Nipomo man who allegedly tried to outrun the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s department, only to get shot in the groin, is back at home.

On Friday sheriff’s deputies say they chased Kyle Joseph Edelen, 21, down Highway 101 at speeds of up to 100 mph before colliding with Edelen’s Honda Civic near the Highway 166 southbound onramp.

It’s unclear exactly what happened when the cars finally stopped. The officers were uninjured after the collision, and Edelen ended up at Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria after taking a bullet in the “lower-body area. He was charged with evading a police officer while driving recklessly and later posted bail.

The names of the sheriff’s deputies involved in the incident have not been released. Currently the deputies are on paid leave, which is common during a shooting investigation.
