Fairy tales have princes, princesses, royalty, magic, and happy endings; Real life has tragedy, poverty, love, and struggle. My names is Jaime Jones and I’m a 22-year-old homeless ‘homo’ living in S.L.O. The city is beautiful, the people are beautiful, and the weather is beautiful but the homeless are not.
We are considered and treated like a plague to society, forced to hide ourselves wherever we can so we do not cause sores to the eyes of the upper class. We camp and have a community amongst ourselves, not because we have to but because we are forced to. The upper class not only turns its back on us and shows us no pity, but wages war against us which will not be over until every homeless person in SLO is gone.
But why? Why should the upper class hate us so much, why should they treat us like vermin, why should they show such disgust towards us and not just let us be. Most of us do not choose to be like this, it is forced upon us, it’s an unlucky hand we were dealt. In my case I chose this life, not to be permanent but a temporary situation.
I was born and raised in a small town and that’s where I stayed until I was 21 and moved to SLO to follow the man I had fallen so deeply in love with. I gave up all my materialistic possessions, my shelter, my comfortable lifestyle, and hardest of all, I gave up my family for a chance at love in SLO. It was a drastic change but not one I regret.
Life here is what I make it and I may be homeless and considered scum to others but they are the poor ones for I am rich in love, I am rich with intelligence, and I am rich with appreciation for the little things in life that money cannot buy.
