Literally a slap in the face of all the residents of San Luis Obispo. Council persons Ashbaugh, Christianson, and Rivoire delivered yet another insult to their constituents by siding with another out of town profiteer, Andrew Firestone, over the objections of a hundred neighborhood residents and the City Planning Commission, for Firestone’s excessively large hotel on upper Monterey Street. This Darth Vaderish four story monstrosity will dwarf surrounding businesses and tower over not only the creek but the San Luis Drive neighborhood. Firestone objected to the request by the residents to remove just the fourth floor, as he said “It didn’t pencil out.” Can you say greed!
While City Hall has been turning a deaf ear toward residents for years—can you say Laguna Lake?—this nose thumbing has got to be one of the worst. Since the council gets its marching orders from the Chamber of Commerce/developers, and the residents are disorganized, who is going to stop them?
It is time to follow the lead of the Santa Barbara City Council and elect council persons from districts, not at large.
I have also purchased my last package of Firestone ales and urge all other neighborhood residents to join the boycott.
