Grover Beach police released the name of a 37-year-old homicide victim discovered during an apartment fire July 11.
Police believe that Joseph Charles Kienly IV was killed after a physical altercation with his roommate, 41-year-old Manuel Jesus Perez.
Kienly’s body was discovered after both the police and the Five Cities Fire Authority responded to reports of a structure fire at an apartment in the 100 block of North 13th Street. They located a small fire inside a single apartment, as well as Kienly, who was deceased.
Police said that Perez fled the scene before emergency crews arrived, and was later arrested in San Luis Obispo.
According to his social media profile, Kienly attended Arroyo Grande High School and studied recording and mixing at Allan Hancock College. In a recent interview with a local television station that took place just three days before his death, Kienly said that he’d lived on 13th Street for the last five years.
Perez is currently in custody in SLO County jail facing charges of first-degree murder, starting a fire that causes great bodily injury, and causing a fire in an inhabited property. He is being held without bail.
